Ways you can renew your child's passport

If you need to travel within 10 working days of submitting your application you will not be able to apply online, you will need to apply using the paper application form.

The easiest way to renew your child's New Zealand passport is to apply online, from anywhere in the world, you won't need to print off forms, mail us anything or visit a Passport office. Paper application forms (if you need one) can still be downloaded from this site, printed and mailed for processing. Pre-printed application forms are also available from your nearest Passport office.

What you'll need to renew a child's passport...

Your child's current New Zealand passport

During your application, you will need to enter your child's details exactly as they appear in their passport. If you can't find your child's passport you can contact us by Freephone 0800 22 52 12 (New Zealand only) or +64 4 463 9375 for advice.

An identity referee's passport details

An identity referee is a non-family member that has a New Zealand passport and has known your child for more than 1 year or from birth. You will need to tell us the referee's name, date of birth, and passport number exactly as it appears in their passport. You will also need to supply their daytime contact phone number(s) in case we need to contact them.

A digital passport photo

We recommend having your child's photo taken by a professional photo taker (eg pharmacy or Postshop) as they have experience meeting the quite strict requirements, and should offer you a reshoot if the photo fails.
Digital photos must be in a .JPG or .JPEG format and are usually provided via CD, USB or email. You can then upload them during the application process.

You can also take the photo of your child yourself and check it is suitable by using the Online Photo Checker tool. If you plan to do this you will need to read the instructions on how to take passport photos.

A credit card

We accept Visa, Mastercard or American Express credit cards. Debit card versions of Visa and Mastercard are also accepted along with NZ Post 'Prezzy Cards'. EFTPOS, Direct Debit and Cash payments are not available online.
