The name in your passport needs to match the name on your travel ticket/s. If you’ve changed your name and you want this in your passport, you need to apply for a new passport.
If the name change took place in New Zealand most people can apply online for their passport. No documents need to be sent to us.
You need to tell us:
- the date of the name change
- your previous name and your new name
- the reason for the name change.
Name change by marriage or civil union
If you change your name by marriage or civil union you can still travel on a passport that’s in your original name (e.g. maiden name). You just need to make sure you book your tickets using the name in your passport.
If you do want to change the name in your passport, you can apply for a new one.
Name change by statutory declaration
If you change your name by statutory declaration you need to use this name in your passport. But you may still use a spouse or partner’s surname in your passport if you’ve been married or had a civil union.
A child’s passport must also be in their legal name.
