Apply for a child passport - will you send or deliver your form?
How will you get the form to us? Send it or hand-deliver it?
Choose a delivery method that best suits your child’s travel plans and their current location. Leave enough time for their application to arrive at the Passport office, including the number of working days it will take us to issue the passport, and the delivery time to get it delivered back to your child.
Your child's previous passport
If your child has a New Zealand passport you are not required to send it to us. Once your child's application has been received your child's previous New Zealand passport will be cancelled and cannot be used for travel.

We will contact you if we need to
If anything is wrong, or if we need more information, we will usually contact you by letter within 3 to 5 working days after we’ve received a standard application, or we will call you if there’s a problem with an urgent application.
If your child's travel becomes urgent
If your child is waiting for their passport to be issued and their need to travel becomes urgent, faster processing options may be available.
- You can upgrade a standard passport application to an urgent application for an additional fee, and your child’s passport will usually be issued within 3 working days after receiving the additional fee.
- Contact us if your child needs to travel immediately.
- Contact us if its a family emergency, and we will do our best to get your child's passport issued quickly. You may not have to pay the urgent or after hours fees, or it may be refunded after your passport has been issued.
When your child's new passport arrives
- YOU MUST NOT SIGN THE PASSPORT
- Children 10 years and older should sign their own passport on page 3
- Passports for children less than 10 years of age and a baby's passport MUST NOT BE SIGNED
- Read our tips for keeping your passport safe while you're travelling.
- When your child's trip is organised, go to safetravel.govt.nz and register your travel plans. While you're there, check the travel advisories for countries your child is travelling to.
